FAQs: Essential Resources

Why should I sell my wine collection?

There are many reasons to sell a wine collection. Perhaps you no longer have interest in wine due to health reasons, lifestyle reasons, or a change of taste. Sometimes, the value of the wine has appreciated to a point, where you would rather redirect the funds elsewhere. In some cases, just a few bottles or cases of wine could be sold, and you could use the funds to create meaningful and lasting memories with your family.

Should I send my wine to auction?

Certainly wine auctions have an important place in the general wine market, but that does not mean that it fits everyone’s needs. What is not always known, is that many wine retailers routinely shop at auction for merchandise to sell in their stores. That means, the prices at auction could be low enough that such a merchant can resell the wine for a profit, and the auction house still profits off your transaction. Auction scheduling can be months out, and you are not paid for weeks or months after the sale. Selling direct can remove these layers which results in a higher sale price for your wine.

What is Provenance and why is it important?

Provenance can be explained as tracing the ownership history and storage history of a wine collection. We need to establish where your wine came from (purchased at retail, at the winery, etc.) and how you have stored and transported it over the years (home cellar, professional storage, passive underground cellar, etc.) This will help us establish the likelihood that your wine is (1) in good condition, (2) drinkable, and (3) not a counterfeit bottle.

The stronger the provenance, the higher the price you will get for your collection.
