That means, the prices at auction could be low enough that such a merchant can resell the wine for a profit, and the auction house still profits off your transaction. Provenance can be explained as tracing the ownership history and storage history of a wine collection. We need to establish where your wine came from (purchased at retail, at the winery, etc.) and how you have stored and transported it over the years (home cellar, professional storage, passive underground cellar, etc.) This will help us establish the likelihood that your wine is (1) in good condition, (2) drinkable, and (3) not a counterfeit bottle.

The stronger the provenance, the higher the price you will get for your collection.
